As the English name suggests it is `deathless' (derived from Sanskrit) and the story of Amaranth, the way the Spanish Conquistadors tried to kill it off from Meso-America and its return is as thrilling as an Indian Jones epic. I wrote it up for the Oregonian when I was working there in 1985. It is also called `Tandulja' or born-of-rice in Sanskrit and old Marathi.
